It has a watermark, so presumably a stock photo…

Yeah, my mum is like that. She’ll readily tell you that you can put dandelion into salad, but also considers it a weed.
She’s also always very concerned what the neighbors think of our lawn (not that she ever asked), and one time she told me we had to mow the lawn, because dandelions are growing on there. When I told her that dandelions are flowers and that I think flowers look better than bland green, you could really see that she never even thought about it this way.
My first thought was bugs and berries looking similar to a marble, but moving water makes a lot of sense. There’s for example also cat fountains you can buy, because some cats won’t drink the still water in a bowl.
Can certainly also see why it got named that… 🙃

Technology@lemmy.ml•Logic-driven AI could slash energy use by 100x while outperforming today’s most powerful systemsEnglish
3·23 days agoI’ve been wondering, if you could combine LLMs with a logic programming language like Prolog. The latter is actually able to reason through things, you “just” have to express them in Prolog facts and rules.
Well, from doing a quick online search, I’m most certainly not the first person to think of this, which does not surprise me at all…

Science Memes@mander.xyz•C-can some cross-disciplinary humor be permitted in this comm? 🥺English
41·26 days agoWell, if he just got his tenure at 40, that means he presumably did something else in his life before tackling this path. Him saying the students can just call him Jeff is also maybe linked to him having still been a student until recently. I assume, it’s a case of this being funny, if you actually study history and know a professor like that. 🫠

161·26 days agoI think, it’s just used as in “late bloomer”, so someone who needed a bit longer, but now found their true potential. “Bloom” as in the thing flowers do.

Technology@lemmy.ml•Copilot is now injecting ads into PR descriptionsEnglish
3·30 days agoYeah, and the worst part is that submitting the PR is trivial. You just offload the reviewing work onto the maintainer and then feed the review comments back into the AI. Effectively, you’re making the maintainer talk to the AI, by going through you as a middleman, a.k.a. completely wasting their time.
I don’t feel like these positions are at odds with one another, unless you become active in reducing the number of humans, of course.
Like, you can uplift and protect people by stopping them from killing their environment, because you recognize that people are an invasive species that will do that.

Science Memes@mander.xyz•Only half of the calories produced on croplands are available as food for human consumptionEnglish
1·1 month agoPerhaps also worth adding that here in Europe, lots of soy is now actually being grown regionally, as it can withstand the higher temperatures we now have from climate change…

Science Memes@mander.xyz•Only half of the calories produced on croplands are available as food for human consumptionEnglish
8·1 month agoAm vegan. Certainly don’t eat nearly as much as @Carnelian@lemmy.world. But it is a pretty flexible food. Like, I can get soy yoghurt that tastes like the real deal. I can get TVP, which is chewy like a steak. I just had fucking noodles out of 85% soy + 15% chickpeas, and they actually tasted good. And of course, the all-time classic: Soy sauce.
I don’t stan for soy nearly as much as many others, because other legumes and nuts are awesome, too, but you just can’t deny that soy covers a lot of bases quite well.

Technology@lemmy.ml•BuzzFeed Nearing Bankruptcy After Disastrous Turn Toward AIEnglish
14·1 month agoWas recently thinking this might happen to Pinterest, too. Their webpage was never great, with how it tried to prevent you from downloading images, when that was literally the only reason I would ever visit. But at least, they did have a big database of images and a decent algorithm for detecting visual similarity.
And well, they have an even bigger database of images now, but the majority of it is not worth looking at, because the images are not real. I don’t bother visiting anymore, because you can’t find anything worthwhile on there anymore.
They did announce going all-in on AI at some point, but I don’t know, if they actually decided to generate images themselves. That seems almost too stupid.
Could be that they have some financial incentives for folks posting and that alone lead to tons of AI-generated uploads. I don’t actually know how Pinterest was supposed to work…

Technology@lemmy.ml•Amazon Data Centers on Fire After Iranian Missile Strikes on Dubai [ME-CENTRAL-1]English
43·2 months agoOh man, I don’t want to get deep into all the politics involved, but man, this reads like complete non-sense:
The outage comes following Iranian attacks on the UAE as retaliation for US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
If they did specifically target US corporations in UAE, that would make some amount of sense as direct retaliation.
I guess, you can also attack UAE and hope that they pressure the US to stop invading.
But in any case, this seems like a really good way to drag more nations into the conflict, or at least to force them to become active, which is not in the interest of Iran.
I’m open for counterarguments, but I always felt this was a silly way of looking at things. You cannot measure stuff at the quantum level without significantly altering what you measured. (You can never measure without altering what you measured, since we typically blast stuff with photons from a light source to be able to look at it, but for stuff that’s significantly larger than photons, the photons are rather insignificant.)
As such, you can look at measuring quanta in two ways:
- Either the quantum had the state that you end up measuring all along. It is only “undetermined”, because strictly nothing can measure it before you do that first measurement.
- Or you can declare it to have some magical “superposition”, from which it jumps into an actual state in the instant that you do the measurement.
Well, and isn’t quantum entanglement evidence for 1.? You entangle these quanta, then you measure one of them. At this point, you already know what the other one will give as a result for its measurement, even though you have not measured/altered it yet.
You can do the measurement quite a bit later and still get the result that you deduced from measuring the entangled quantum. (So long as nothing else altered the property you want to measure, of course…)
The analogy that makes most sense to me so far, is this:
You rip a photograph in half and put both halves into envelopes. Now you send one of the envelopes to your friend in Australia. You open the other envelope. Boom! Instantaneous knowledge of what’s in the envelope in Australia. Faster than light!!!In quantum terms, you “rip a photograph in half” by somehow producing two quanta, which are known to have correlated properties. For example, you can produce two quanta, where one has a positive spin and the other a negative spin, and you know those to be equally strong. If you now measure the spin of the first quantum, you know that the other has the opposite spin.

Linux@programming.dev•The state of Linux music players in 2026English
1·3 months agoYeah, I did not expect them to do that title justice, because how in the hell could anyone try 200 music players, but how did they get down to 7 and somehow skip some of the most popular players…? Did all of those somehow look broken on their setup? 🫠

Oh man, of course that’s a thing now. Can’t copyright that shit, but you can watermark your territory and hope that no one bothers to distribute the non-copyrightable non-watermarked version that you’re selling.
