To add to this I would start towards Fedora as it’s stable but also fresh, and as lots of people have been saying try Gnome as your desktop environment.

Asahi Linux is for Apple silicon macs only, and as their macbook is 11 years old it can’t be an apple silicon version.
Just brings a tear to my eye knowing someone else is starting on their Linux journey 🥲
