I don’t think it’s a dumb question at all. I’m not a physics person but I think what you’re describing is a thermal battery. It’s the reason people put tiles in their ovens for smoothing out hot and cold spots and moderating temperature swings from the oven cutting on and off or opening the door.

  • I totally understand your frustration. It was a bit of bait and switch. I don’t like relying on a tool being hosted either because if Keychron goes away, it’s electronic waste at that point. I had a Steele series Apex keyboard that I loved. The per key RGB configuration was awesome. But their proprietary Mac software was buggy at best and often a pain in the ass to get what I wanted. I eventually gave up on them and switched to more open keyboards.

Honestly I’m not sure why they chose to have the configuration tool online. Seems like something they have to maintain long term which seems kinda dumb. Most of the QMK keyboards are VIA/Vial compatible which can be locally configured.

But after configuring my keyboard, I haven’t touched it. So in your analogy I had to solder the wire once and it’s been stable.

I personally chose Keychron (I have three) because they are excellent quality and have Mac keys by default. I love Macs but damn the keyboards just suck. I have several other keyboards in a drawer that were based on QMK or circuit python (KMK) but they required sourcing cases, keys, switches, etc none of which I had to do with my keychron, well unless I wanted to.

  • I think both are true. When the media is controlled and the populace is spoon fed bullshit for a long enough period of time, people who lack critical thinking skills eat it up and vote against their own self interests. People are also very unlikely to take responsibility for their own actions and find it much easier to blame others for their own shortcomings, which leads to tribalism and racism among other things. The other major issue is the giant wealth disparity causing a huge imbalance of power and influence. Couple that with the inability to have politicians not beholden to that power and money (citizens united) and you have the perfect storm of bullshit and corruption.

I really think the quote from Agent K in MIB really sums it up.

A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals, and you know it. Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat, and fifteen minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on this planet. Imagine what you’ll know tomorrow.

Don’t get me wrong, there are people who are just trolls and assholes who are beyond saving. But I continue to believe they are exceptions rather than the norm.

  • I did read the article. This was a branding by the USB-IF for previous generation meant to be an example of the lunacy that is this group. Meant for engineers or not it was still dumb. The new standards are no better with passives vs active, asymmetric transmissions, etc. and then on top of all this is the thunderbolt designations that I’m still not sure what they all mean with respect to the USB standards.

Just last week I was trying to hook two Mac studios together using the new RDMA features in 26.4 and had to special order cables because none of the ones I had worked (well they “worked” … just not as fast as they should have)

Edit: Most end users don’t care. If they plug in a cable and it “works” that’s good enough. Only nerds like us care if it’s as fast as it can go.
